We really are on the countdown to Christmas now, & sooner (rather than later), is a good time to get your garden in order in preparation for the visitors that the summer holidays bring. You can’t blame people for wanting to visit the Sunshine Coast at Christmas; it is a hard place to beat!
As we head into the real heat of the year, perhaps the most important job in the garden is to protect your garden beds with a generous application of mulch. Mulch locks moisture in the soil, helps prevent soil erosion & slows (or stops), weeds from taking over your garden beds. Over time, mulch slowly breaks down & returns important nutrients to the soil. Plus, it has the added benefit of making scrappy, depleted garden beds look fresh & tidy.
Cypress mulch is a terrific choice for those on a budget, as it is generally less expensive than many other organic mulches. Because the wood of cypress trees is slow to break down, cypress mulch lasts longer (up to 2 years). Our 100% shredded cypress bark is a rich, reddish brown colour, which both lasts & holds its colour longer than many other mulches. Cypress mulch is ideal for embankments, slopes & wind swept areas. It retains moisture extremely well, reducing water requirements for your garden. This is especially important as we enter our brutal summer months.
Cypress mulch has a beautiful fresh fragrant aroma. It is perfect around timber homes as it is naturally termite resistant, & helps to keep other insects away. While the bugs don’t like cypress mulch, it is completely family and pet friendly.
Make sure you weed the area before applying the mulch, and then lay your cypress mulch at a minimum depth of 8 - 10cm. This ensures the sunlight will not reach the soil, & weeds cannot grow under those conditions.

Mulching is one of the most important Winter garden jobs because it insulates the soil, retains moisture and suppresses weed growth.
