Why choose sandstone for landscaping

2 min read

Sandstone has become the hero of home garden design, where it traditionally was mostly found in large scale commercial designs.

Happily it is more available now, and accessible to people with a broad range of tastes and budgets.

At the moment, we have got absolutely LOADS of odds and sods of sandstone in the yard, and we would really like to clear it in time for our 10th birthday (which is coming up on the 15th of August).

At a glance, here are some great reasons to consider using sandstone in your garden (or home), design:

  • Superior durability and strength
  • Is available in a huge range of shapes, colours, patterns and forms
  • It is suitable for both residential and commercial applications
  • Neutral tones radiate heat during winter and are cool in summer
  • Comes in a wide array of colors making it easy to match existing décor
  • It requires minimal maintenance and is easy to replace if they get damaged
  • Sandstone is easily sealed against the elements to prevent corrosion and accumulated moisture
  • It retains its colour a lot better than many other landscaping materials, even in extreme climates and weather conditions

Did you know that many sandstones have unique features according to their different colours?

  1. Pink and red sandstone has a slip-free surface that is impervious to weathering
  2. Yellow sandstone is highly resilient to acidic water and salt, even salty ocean breezes. That is why you very commonly see it used in coastal settings.
  3. Dark brown, chocolate and auburn sandstone is composed of iron oxide which hides smudges and stains
  4. Light grey, beige, cream and white sandstone are perforated with red or purple lines. This type of sandstone is often used for sculptures and statues due to it's beautiful and unique patterning and colours.

As we said, we have heaps of bits and bobs of quality sunshine coast sandstone in the yard at the moment, so please, drop by and take a look. There are some real gems amongst it all.
