Gabion Inspiration: Rocks Sunshine Coast style

2 min read

You've no doubt seen gabion cages in every gardening magazine, display and home improvement show in recent times. They are a red hot trend in landscaping right now.

And with good reason, because creating something unique for your garden using gabion cages and stone is something even the least handy person on a limited budget can successfully attempt on their own.

A gabion (from Italian gabbione meaning "big cage") is a cage, cylinder, or box filled with rocks, concrete, or sometimes sand and soil for use in civil engineering, road building, and military applications.

Gabions are free-draining walls, structures, or pieces of furniture that are constructed by filling large galvanised steel baskets with pebbles, rocks, or any other type of hard building material you can imagine. Gabion walls are in many instances, the most cost effective structural wall available. Gabion baskets are available in a variety of different sizes. They come in 1/2 or 1 metre high, and 2, 3, or 4 metres long.

Since the baskets are constructed of galvanised mesh wire and filled with rock or hard materials, the flexibility of a gabion structure allows it to withstand pressure without deforming, cracking or breaking as in the case of concrete and other materials.

There are very few limits when it comes to the construction of a gabion wall or gabion furniture. Walls can be constructed following grade along a road, tapered on top to follow changing elevation or terraced creating stunning flower gardens that can flow over the wall.

What type of stone will best suit your overall development? Any type of stone can be used but remember the larger the stones the more time consuming filling the baskets will be. Larger stones need to be individually placed to get that classic look. Smaller stones can be poured, using a bucket, into the baskets, with very little stone arrangement required.
