Garden Art, Tom Finlay

Creating unique and timeless landscapes using rustic and organic materials is something of a passion for Garden Art director, Tom Finlay. "Sometimes, I start off on a project with a brief from my client to give them something unique, and then I see where the process takes me,” Tom said.

“I particularly love working with materials such as replica railway sleepers, slate, sandstone, crazy paving and bush rocks to build outdoor spaces my clients love to spend time in,” he said.

Below are examples of a recent job Tom completed, landscaping an outdoor living area using Gabion cages as a feature.

“Gabion cages are a fantastic option for projects such as these,” Tom said. “By choosing your materials carefully, you can tie in with the existing colour scheme and building style, without the addition looking as though it has just been ‘tacked on’. Gabion walls don’t require any other drainage systems, and if you can only see one side of them, you can use a cheaper material to hide the side you can’t see, and use the more expensive material at the front. In this example, we used Blue Stone.

Tom can also design completely unique and custom waterfalls and features, dry creek beds, stonework, steps and paths, retaining walls, pool surrounds, paving and assist with plant selection for areas as small as a courtyard, right up to acreage properties.
